Purdue on top of the list for Cincinnati freshman playmaker

He may only be a freshman, but that didn’t stop Purdue from offering Anderson High School (OH) linebacker/tight end Antwoine Higgins Jr. this week.

“It feels great. Purdue was always on the top of my list because of their defense and how they utilize their outside linebackers in the pass rush game. They get after the quarterback,” Higgins told Boiler Wire.

As a freshman, Higgins recorded 53 total tackles, two sacks, six tackles for a loss, an interception and four pass breakups. Higgins said the Purdue coaching staff told him they liked what they saw on film.

“They like that I am a versatile player. My run and pass defense is good. I can rush the quarterback, guard slots man to man and fill in gaps,” Higgins said.

Flurry of offers coming in for Higgins

In addition to the offer from the Boilermakers, Higgins holds offers from the likes of Indiana, Toledo, Boston College, Eastern Kentucky, Bowling Green, West Virginia, and Massachusetts.

“I am not necessarily surprised because I knew the work I put in to be in this position. I am shocked it is happening so soon. I am very grateful for my coaches, mainly my head coach, Coach Dryer, for believing in me even though I was a freshman and for allowing me to create some great film for college coaches,” Higgins said.

He said the Boilermakers are at the top of his list, and he has enjoyed forming a relationship with assistant coach Joe Dineen.

“I don’t have a visit planned yet. I may go to the Junior Day, but I did build a relationship with the linebacker coach, Coach Dineen. Relationships are very important to me. So many players lose the love for a school because of bad coaches, so I make sure the coach is a great guy on and off the field,” Higgins said.

As he prepares for the upcoming season, Higgins said his goals are simple — to win.

“My goals for the upcoming season are to win a regional championship again, and, hopefully, compete for a state title. I also want to create more turnovers and show off more of my speed on film,” Higgins said.
