Purdue Women’s Basketball: Stevenson earns huge honor

As has been the case all season for the Purdue women’s basketball team, freshman Mary Ashley Stevenson made her presence felt again.

The Purdue freshman was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year Tuesday. It marks the first time in two decades Purdue has had a Big Ten Freshman of the Year. It is also the first time coach Katie Gearlds has had a player win the award.

This season, Stevenson averaged 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds, while shooting over 43 percent from the field. Against Big Ten foes, Stevenson averaged 10.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. In addition, she finished second among freshmen in the Big Ten in rebounding in conference games and second in scoring.

She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice and earned the first USBWA National Freshman of the Week honor in Purdue history.

Gearlds said a major difference in Stevenson’s game this season has been maturity.

“There’s been some games, she has been really good and other games, you can tell she just hasn’t played a lot. Anytime she allows the game to come to her, she is really good. Her work all year long has been so solid. We thrust her into it right away and she accepted the challenge. I am really proud of her,” Gearlds said.

Purdue women’s basketball opens the Big Ten Tournament tonight against Northwestern.
