Fresh off picking up its first road win in the Big Ten Conference, the Purdue women’s basketball team will look to pick up its second win in a row today when it hosts Nebraska (16-9, 8-6).
The two teams have already met once this season with the Cornhuskers knocking off Purdue (11-13, 4-9), 68-54. In that game, Abbey Ellis led the way with 15 points for the Purdue women’s basketball team, while Caitlyn Harper added 10 for the Boilermakers. As a team, Purdue shot 36.1 percent from the field, while Nebraska shot 42.4 percent and nailed seven three pointers. Darian White and Alexis Markowski each scored 14 for Nebraska.

Purdue women’s basketball needs to make shots, coach says

Looking back on the first game, Purdue women’s basketball coach Katie Gearlds said her team needs to shoot the ball well.
“We need to make shots. We had five minutes to two and a half minutes and we got wide open shots but they didn’t go in. Their kids made some open shots and we didn’t. There was a little bit of fight in the fourth quarter from our young kids, but we need 40 minutes of it,” Gearlds said.
The two teams come in today with mixed results their last time out. Purdue knocked off Northwestern 74-48, shooting 46 percent and hitting nine three pointers. Harper led the way with 17 points, while Madison Layden hit five three pointers to finish with 16 points, and Ellis scored 14 to hit 1,000 career points.

Nebraska can make shots, putting teams in a “pickle.”

Nebraska, on the other hand, lost 80-47 against Ohio State. In the loss, the Cornhuskers gave up 29 points off 30 turnovers, as the Buckeyes held them to a season low for points. Alexis Markowski paced Nebraska with nine points and 16 boards.
Despite the loss, Gearlds said Nebraska has playmakers that can put opposing teams in tough spots due their ability to shoot the ball.
“They all shoot it well. They’ve got people who are skilled inside, but they all shoot it from the perimeter. It puts you in a pickle. We have to be locked in to attention to detail. They are a good team that beat Iowa at home and lost at Ohio State. I expect them to be fired up,” Gearlds said.
Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Mackey Arena, as Purdue honors its women’s basketball alumns, as well as celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
