Heading into today’s road contest at Wisconsin, Purdue women’s basketball coach Katie Gearlds just wanted to see her team play well.
Consider it mission accomplished, as the Boilermakers earned the season sweep after knocking off Wisconsin, 79-55. In the win, Purdue had a season high 14 steals, turned over the Badgers 20 times and got it done on both ends of the floor. Perhaps, more important, the win was the second on the road for Purdue.
Leading the way for Purdue women’s basketball was senior Abbey Ellis, who scored 21 points. Fellow classmate Caitlyn Harper added 19 for the Boilermakers, who improved to 12-15 overall, 5-11 Big Ten Conference.
After game after game of missing shots, Purdue found the bottom of the net early and often, shooting 29-of-58 from the field, and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
While the seniors carried the load, Purdue women’s basketball got solid outputs from its freshmen, as Mary Ashley Stevenson scored 12 and Sophie Swanson contributed with a pair of three pointers en route to scoring 11.
The Boilermakers will host Penn State Wednesday for Senior Night at Mackey Arena. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. Penn State picked up a win over Purdue back in January, 80-67, at Penn State.
