The season has come to a close for the Purdue softball team following a disappointing 6-3 loss against rival Indiana in the opening round of the Big Ten Softball Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa.
With the loss, the Boilermakers, who were seeded ninth, end their season, while Indiana advances to play regular season champ Northwestern.
The 8th seeded Hoosiers immediately took control of the game, plating three runs in the first inning. However, Purdue softball would bounce right back, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a double by Sage Scarmardo to threaten. The scoring opportunity was cut short, and Indiana made Purdue softball pay, registering three more runs to go ahead 6-0 after two innings.
The fifth inning proved to be beneficial for the Boilermakers, as Purdue softball scored three runs on four hits, as Indiana’s pitching struggled, hitting a batter with the bases loaded and recording a wild pitch. Coming through for the Boilermakers with a hot bat was Moriah Polar, who belted an RBI and notched a run scored.
While the loss was disappointing, Purdue softball showed signs of promise under first year head coach Magali Frezzotti. Purdue set a program for consecutive Big Ten victories, tied a team record for triples in a season and stolen bases.
