Purdue baseball catcher Connor Caskenette finally heard his name called Tuesday in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Caskenette was selected in the 12th round by the Miami Marlins after an incredible season for Purdue baseball this past spring. The senior was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team and was a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award, which goes to the top college catcher. Caskenette hit .308 with 60 hits, 71 RBIs and 14 homers for the Boilermakers.
He played two seasons for Purdue baseball, hitting .295 and notching 101 hits, 106 RBIs and 20 home runs. Behind the plate, he was responsible for 611 putouts and registered only two errors.
Caskenette was the only Purdue baseball player drafted in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft and was one of 27 players with ties to the Big Ten Conference drafted. Iowa pitcher Brody Brecht was the highest selected player, as he was drafted 38th by the Colorado Rockies. Indiana led the way with nine players drafted.
Caskenette is the second catcher Miami drafted, as the Marlins also took Coen Niclai, a high school catcher from Alaska.
Purdue baseball finished the 2024 season with a 33-24 overall record and a 13-11 Big Ten Conference mark, finishing the season with seven straight losses. The Boilermakers fell to Indiana and eventual tournament champion Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament.
