Purdue Football: Wide receiver room ready to make plays

Heading into the 2024 Purdue football season, one room that is ready to make plays and help the Boilermakers pick up victories is the wide receiver room.

There are some new faces, along with a few untested, familiar faces in the room this season for wide receivers coach Cory Patterson. Among those looking to make plays this fall are: Georgia transfers DeNylon Morrisette and CJ Smith, returners Jaron Tibbs and Jahmal Edrine, UCLA transfer Kam Brown and Fullerton College transfer Leland Smith.

Patterson said he is pleased with what he has seen out of his receivers, but did single one out in particular this week.

“Jahmal is doing some good stuff and excited about the future. I want to see these guys continue to develop and get things done the way we want them done,” Patterson told the media Thursday.

Tibbs is another player that has generated some buzz heading into the season, and Patterson is excited to see what the former Cathedral (IN) standout can do as a sophomore.

“Phenomenal young man. He’s one of those guys you can just plug and play. He can play every position on the field. I am really excited about Tibbs. I told him I am going to try to out recruit him every year and he just brings his butt back and works his tail off. I’m really excited about him and what he’s bringing to the table. That’s one of those guys that’s truly invaluable,” Patterson said.

A season ago, Purdue football struggled with depth at wide receiver, but the Boilers have plenty of weapons capable of making plays this fall.

“Was it an emphasis? You see how many dudes are out here. Yeah, it was an emphasis. It was a real emphasis. We had to go get some players. We had to get a bunch of them. At that position, they are running a lot and things happen. You have to have some guys ready to play, and I think that is exactly what we did this offseason,” Patterson said.

Patterson said one of the attributes he likes about his room is there are leaders in there who are not afraid to speak up.

“You’ve got some strong leaders in that group and guys who just go to work. It is a great mixture of guys. You don’t have any egos, they are playing hard and playing together,” Patterson said.

Purdue football opens the season Aug. 31 at home against Indiana State.
