Purdue Football: Boilers to receive money for being in game

When the new EA Sports College Football 25 game drops in July, odds are Purdue football fans will race out to grab the game.

And, that could mean a potential financial windfall for the Boilermakers.

According to a report by cllct.com, NCAA Division I football teams will fall into a tier system. The range a program can receive stretches from $100 thousand for a Tier 1 school to less than $10 thousand for a Tier 4 program. The tiers were determined by how each team finished in the final AP Poll over the last decade. When a team finished ranked in the AP Top 25 at the end of the season, it earned a point. Tier 1 teams had 6-10 points, Tier 2 teams 2-5, Tier 3 had a point and Tier 4 had zero points.

The story also mentioned schools will receive additional payments based on the success of the game. It is believed schools could receive a 10 percent royalty on sales. Also, EA Sports College Football 25 will pay each athlete who opts into the game $600 plus a free copy of the game.

When it comes to Purdue football, the Boilermakers find themselves in Tier 4. They are not the only Big Ten program in that tier. The Boilermakers are joined by Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois and Nebraska in Tier 4.

Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Iowa and Big Ten Conference newcomer Oregon were in Tier 1. Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan State and newcomers Southern California, UCLA and Washington were in Tier 2, while Tier 3 consisted of Minnesota and Indiana.

Purdue football opens the 2024 season on Aug. 31 at home against Indiana State.
