Purdue football coach Ryan Walters needs little reminder as to how tough this year’s schedule is.
But just in case he and the Boilermakers forgot, another reminder came this week with the unveiling of the USA Today Coaches Poll. Of the teams ranked in the top 10, Purdue football will play four of them: second ranked Ohio State, third ranked Oregon, seventh ranked Notre Dame and ninth ranked Penn State. Ohio State garnered seven first place votes.
The Ohio State and Penn State games come on back-to-back weeks for the Boilermakers. In addition, Purdue football will take on both Wisconsin and Nebraska, both of whom received votes. The Nebraska and Wisconsin games also come on back-to-back weeks for the Purdue football.
Georgia, who finished last year 13-1, is the preseason number one team. Defending national champion Michigan, who finished 15-0 last year, enters the season ranked eighth in the preseason. When it comes to other Big Ten teams, Southern California was ranked 23rd and Iowa came in 25th.
USC and Iowa rounded out the Big Ten in the USA Today Coaches Poll, with the Trojans at No. 23 and the Hawkeyes sitting at the No. 25 spot.
Heading into the season, many publications have put Purdue football’s schedule as the toughest in the Big Ten and one of the toughest nationally.
