All it took was an offer from Purdue football to help Concord High School running back/linebacker Jaron Thomas solidify his college choice.
After recently being offered by Purdue football, Thomas announced his commitment to the Boilermakers and second year head coach Ryan Walters. Thomas opted for Purdue football over the likes of Army, Ball State, Navy, Southern Illinois and Western Michigan.
“It is definitely a very exciting experience, overall, and them being my first Big Ten offer, it was just a completely different atmosphere. The love that they showed me and their coaching style fit me the best. They also took me for running back, which is the position I rather would have played over linebacker,” Thomas told Boiler Wire.
What set the Boilermakers apart?
Several things, according to Thomas.
“I just grew into such a comfortable and genuine relationship with them. I can tell that they truly believe in me and with them, I will be able to maximize my ability of play for the set future,” Thomas said.
In addition, Thomas said he looks forward to joining what Walters is building with Purdue football.
“It’s very special to be a part of this new culture. They have a vision and know where they want to be in the coming years, including this one, and that’s to win and it starts now,” Thomas said.
Thomas rushed for over 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns for Concord offensively. Defensively, he accounted for 77 tackles and five tackles for a loss.
“It’s a great opportunity, and it is a blessing for my friends and family to have,” Thomas said of Purdue recruiting him for offense.
A Class of 2025 prospect, Thomas said there is some nerves when it comes to making the transition to the next level, but he is ready for whatever comes.
“Obviously, there’s always going to be a little bit of nervousness, but, at the end of the day, I know my coaches are capable of helping me make that jump to the next level. With the help of Coach Conard (Purdue running backs coach), it won’t be much of an issue at all,” Thomas said.
Thomas has an official visit slated with the Boilermakers and said he looks forward to taking more of the school and program in, as well as getting answers to any questions he or his parents may have.
As for coming up with the decision before the season begins, Thomas said it was “huge.”
“It was very important because now it’s all set and done. It is time to focus on high school ball. Not having to stress or worry about camps or colleges anymore is a big relief and it feels like a weight lifted off of my back to be able to just be a high schooler again,” he said.
