It’s official. Purdue basketball big man Zach Edey will not return to Purdue after this season, according to multiple reports.
Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein this is indeed Edey’s last season in West Lafayette and he will not use his extra year of eligibility from COVID.
It has been a magical season for the reigning National Player of the Year, who is averaging 23.7 points and 11.8 rebounds this season. Edey helped lift Purdue to a win Sunday at Michigan to improve to 25-3 overall and 14-3 in the Big Ten, while moving one step closer to a Big Ten Conference title.
For the second consecutive season, Edey is expected to declare for the NBA Draft. Last year, he declared but withdrew his name, returning to Purdue.
Earlier this season, Edey made history, as the Purdue basketball center joined David Robinson and Patrick Ewing as just the third player in NCAA history to score 2,000 points, rip down 1,000 rebounds, block 200 shots and shoot at least 60 percent from the field.
Edey has three regular season games left with the Boilermakers, who host Michigan State Saturday at 8 p.m.
