Purdue Basketball: Edey favorite for NBA Rookie of the Year

There is a ton of basketball to be played this NBA season, but former Purdue basketball big man Zach Edey is already one of the favorites to pick up the Rookie of the Year honor.

The former Purdue big man made quite the impression in his first NBA game, as the 7-foot-4-inch standout scored 14 points, pulled down 15 boards and blocked four shots in an overtime loss against the Utah Jazz Monday. He also threw down a monster jam and had a tip in that sent the game to an extra period with under a second remaining in regulation.

“It was great. Just trying to get comfortable, trying to learn the system, trying to learn how to play with everybody and getting comfortable on the NBA floor. It was fun,” Edey said after the game.

The efforts were enough for FanDuel.com to put Edey at the top of the NBA Rookie of the Year betting odds. The former Purdue basketball standout is a plus 600 favorite to win the honor.

In addition to Edey, the following are on the list:

  • Alexandre Sarr, Washington Wizards (plus-700)
  • Zaccharie Risacher, Atlanta Hawks (plus-750)
  • Dalton Knecht, Los Angeles Lakers (plus-800)
  • Reed Sheppard, Houston Rockets (plus-1000)
  • Matas Buzelis, Chicago Bulls (plus-1000)

The final game in Utah will be on Wednesday, as the Grizzlies square off against the Oklahoma City Thunder at 7 p.m. on the Grind City Media Mobile App.

Once the three game stretch in Utah is done, Edey and Memphis will head to Las Vegas for the NBA2K25 Summer League.

The former Purdue basketball star was drafted ninth in the 2024 NBA Draft. Last season, Edey averaged 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for Purdue basketball. While with the Boilermakers, Edey earned back-to-back National Player of the Year honors and helped carry Purdue to an appearance in the national title contest.
