Purdue Basketball: Boilers offer Tennessee standout

Purdue basketball has extended its reach into the Volunteer State, as the Boilermakers recently offered Greeneville High (TN) standout Trey Thompson.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 220-pound Class of 2026 prospect told Boiler Wire after building a relationship with assistant coach Paul Lusk, he got an offer from Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter.

“Coach Lusk contacted me first and we talked about basketball, family and we bonded over things outside of basketball. Then a few days later, Coach Painter gave me a call, and it is something I will never forget. We spoke for 15 minutes, and he was very knowledgeable about my game and also about the campus,” Thompson said.

Thompson said Painter impressed him with the phone call and that the Boilermakers have several things they like about his game already.

“He is a very great coach, but even better person I sincerely believe. They loved how I played the game the traditional way. They also mentioned my IQ and court vision. They loved that I could also shoot the three as well,” Thompson acknowledged.

Thompson recently earned Four Star status by ESPN and he admits the offer from Purdue basketball means a lot.

“They are a huge school with a great staff. Some thoughts about the program include how well they play together as one. I love how they also use whatever they bring in from high school players and utilize or take advantage in something they will have an edge on. Coach Painter and Coach Lusk are very knowledgeable men that know basketball at the highest level and they know how to be a winner on and off the court,” he said.

In addition to the offer from Purdue basketball, Thompson holds offers from Xavier, Ohio and Appalachian State and has generated interest from Clemson, as well.

“The Boilers stack up well with all of these other schools. I would love to come up and visit Purdue soon. I also have a plan to visit Appalachian State, Tennessee, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Liberty,” Thompson said.

While the basketball season may be a ways away, that is not stopping Thompson from turning his attention to his goals.

“The goals for this upcoming season doesn’t change. I still have to be in the right mindset for this upcoming high school season and pour in hours upon hours of studying and really trying to develop our team over here at Greeneville,” Thompson said.
