It was not the news the Purdue basketball team wanted Thursday, as four star recruit Kanon Catchings asked for his release from his National Letter of Intent.
“Kanon has asked for his release from his scholarship and we have granted him that request,” Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter said. “We wish him luck in his future endeavors.”
Catchings, a forward from Brownsburg (IN), was ranked as the 38th overall player in the Class of 2024, according to 247Sports. Catchings played at Brownsburg High School for three years before transferring to Overtime Elite in Atlanta for his senior season.
Despite losing the top player in its Class of ’24, Purdue basketball still has a strong class coming. The top players in the class are four star guard Gicarri Harris and four star center Daniel Jacobsen.
Harris claimed a state title at Grayson High School (Ga.) and graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Jacobsen, on the other hand, is currently playing for USA Basketball’s U18 National Team. Other players in the class are: forward/center Raleigh Burgess, guard C.J. Cox and guard Jack Benter. Purdue basketball is also slated to bring back guards Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer, as well as forwards Trey Kaufman-Renn and Caleb Furst.
A season ago, Purdue basketball finished 34-5. The Boilermakers captured the Big Ten regular season title and advanced to the NCAA National Championship tilt against UConn.
