Big Ten Conference football title tilt to remain in Indianapolis

New teams. New faces. Same city for the Big Ten Conference football championship game.

Despite adding four west coast teams from the defunct Pac 12, the Big Ten Conference football championship game will stay put in Indianapolis for the next few years.

Commissioner Tony Petitti made the announcement during Big Ten Media Days at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, acknowledging the championship game will remain in the Circle City through the 2028 season.

“The city and community have really embraced the event. It’s impactful. You can can really feel it when you’re there,” Petitti said.

In addition to hosting the Indianapolis Colts, Lucas Oil Stadium is also home to the HBCU Circle City Classic each year. It is also the only home the Big Ten Conference football championship game has ever known.

While Wisconsin won the first Big Ten Championship game, knocking off Michigan State, 42-39, Ohio State has the most Big Ten titles.

Who could contend is anyone’s guess in the new Big Ten, as Southern California, UCLA, Oregon and Washington all enter the conference fray this season. Also, there is a good chance this year’s Big Ten championship game will have big implications on the national championship scene. In eight out of 10 seasons, the Big Ten sent at least one team to the College Football Playoff.

This year, the Big Ten Conference is getting away from divisions and the two teams traveling to Lucas Oil Stadium will be determined by conference standings.

The 2024 Big Ten Conference Championship game will be held Dec. 7, 2024.
