Purdue Football: Brees inducted into Saints HOF

A former Purdue football and NFL legend has been recognized, as quarterback Drew Brees was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame recently.

For Brees, the honor was made possible after 15 years with the Saints. During his time with New Orleans, Brees was a 12 time Pro Bowler, led the Saints to a win in Super Bowl XLIV, earned Super Bowl MVP honors and was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice.

“This is a tremendous honor, and I am so grateful to everybody here, and forever will be. Once a Saint, always a Saint. And I will be living and dying with the team every Sunday,” Brees said during the ceremony.

During his Purdue football career, Brees experienced quite a bit of success with the Boilermakers under then coach Joe Tiller.

Brees picked up Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1998 and 2000 and was the conference’s Most Valuable Player in 2000. During the 2000 season, Brees guided Purdue football to a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl appearance during an 8-4 campaign. During his days as a Boilermaker, Brees threw for 10,909 yards, 81 touchdowns and completed over 60 percent of his passes. However, he could also hurt teams with his legs, as he rushed for over 900 yards and scampered for 14 touchdowns.

After playing at Purdue, Brees was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 2001 NFL Draft.
